The culture of political violence seems to be taking roots as Chike Okafor, the All Progressives Congress member of House of Reps, representing Obowo/Ehime/Ihitte Uboma fed constituency Imo State, has been seen in a vial video allegedly inciting political thugs to violence against other political parties, ahead of the November 11, Imo Governorship election.
In the video, Okafor boot-licking Governor Hope Uzodinma, was heard telling a group of political thugs, loyal to his party, the APC, to make sure that the Imo governor gets 100% of the votes in his area.
Recall that Uzodinma had on Friday emerged the APC candidate, following APC Imo Governorship primary election held at the Ndubuisi Kanu Square in Owerri, the state capital.
“You are the soldiers,” Okafor hailed them, and they chanted a resounding yes.
“No other party is allowed to come here to campaign. I am giving it to you as an instruction and as a directive.
“No other party should be allowed to drop canopy or anything anywhere in Ihitte Uboma local government area. That is our position. Isn’t it?”
The thugs again chorused in the affirmative.
Recall that the March 18 Lagos Gubernatorial had been marred by violence after Mr. Musiliu Akinsanya of the APC made issued a similar intimidation and call to violence. There were also widespread violence in other parts of the country, particularly in Rivers.
As at the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Police had yet to respond to our request for comments on Okafor’s incitement to violence.
