
Six people have died in a boat mishap in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, SP. Catherine Anene, said in a statement on Thursday.
The incident occurred at 1:00pm on Tuesday when the boat in which they were travelling capsized near Fada village.
She said that the ill-fated boat was conveying 40 persons from Guma LGA to Buruku LGA for business activities when it capsized around Fada village in Guma.
According to her 26 persons were wounded, while eight are still missing.
Anene stated, “Combined efforts of the police and fishermen in the area led to the rescue of twenty six (26) persons who were taken to a hospital for treatment, six (6) corpses have been recovered while a search for the remaining eight (8) persons is on going.
“The Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, CP. Wale Abass, commiserates with families and friends of the dead while advising travellers who choose water transport to employ maximum safety measures while travelling on water especially now that the volume of water is very high.”
