Governor Nyesom Wike, currently the “beautiful bride” of Nigerian politics, has indicated that he will not support the presidential bid of Atiku Abubakar, the flagbearer of his party, the Peoples Democratic Party.
Wike dropped the hint in a viral video seen on Wednesday by CHECKPOINTCHARLEY, praying instead to God to set confusion in the PDP.
The Rivers governor, who has remained implaccable since losing the presidential ticket to the former vice president said, “They gave something to Adamawa, to Benue and Delta, but nothing to Rivers, and they think Rivers is where they will come and collect votes; that will never happen.
“The God of confusion will put confusion in them, they think is Rivers State they are doing, they are doing themselves.
“They will see confusion from now till the end until they will withdraw and understand that there is no road there.
He was obviously refering to the outcome of the PDP presidential primary, which was overshadowed by allegations of massive vote buying.
Recall that his camp had accused PDP chairman Iyorchia Ayu of favouring Atiku.
Wike’s camp had called for Ayu’s resignation, as a condition to negotiate his backing of Atiku. However speaking to BBC Hausa service on Wednesday, Ayu said he will Never resign.
The PDP chairman said, “I was voted as PDP national chairman to serve for four years, I am not even a year old on the position,” the former senator said.
“Atiku’s victory at the national primaries has no nothing to do with the party’s leadership; I was the bonafide winner of the election. We acted within the dictates of PDP constitution.
“I have not violated any rules; in fact, I am working to bring reforms to the party. I am truly not bothered by the unnecessary controversy being generated.”
CHECKPOINTCHARLEY could not verify if the viral video is a response to Ayu’s grandstanding or when it was made. But it is a recent video.
Efforts to get reaction of Paul Ibe, spokesman of the Atiku campaign had not been fruitful as at the time of filing this report.
The nation is now watching in suspense Gov Wike’s next move. Though there are rumours that he would throw his weight behind Peter Obi, the popular candidate of the Labour Party and the face of the New Nigerian movement that is swelling by the day.
