The Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Godwin Emefiele on Thursday mocked Nigerians he is aspiring to lead as president, saying “let them have heart attack, it’s good to have heart attack; I am having a lot of fun.”
Emefiele said this after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at Aso Rock Villa in Abuja when reporters reminded him that his his current position as a presidential aspirant and the CBN governor is a major point of concern for Nigerians and even the international community.
The CBN arrogance and unkind words come barely 24 hours after the President ordered members of his cabinet vying for various elective positions to resign on or before May 16, 2022 and after a circular by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, with reference number SGF/OP/ I/S.3/XII/ 173, ordered all heads of agencies, departments, parastatals, and ambassadors with political ambitions to resign.
When sked to respond to reports that Buhari had directed him to resign, Emefiele said, “There is no news now, but there will be news. You heard me, I said there is no news but there will be news”.
Although no official statement has been issued on why the CBN Governor visited the seat of power, it may not be unconnected with the rumour that he would seek the presidential ticket of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2023 election.
