President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday departed Nigeria for a two-week medical vacation in London.
Buhari, who is expected to undergo his routine medical check-up in London, told journalists at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja before he left that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will be in charge of things while he is away.
Buhari said he is not doing the business of running the administration alone, as other key officials are involved including the vice president, the chief of staff, and the Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha.
“Well, I cannot claim to be doing the work alone. The government is fully represented; the vice president is there; constitutionally when I’m away, he’s in charge,” President Buhari said.
The president had initially planned to embark on the trip from Nairobi, Kenya, after attending the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) at 50 in that country.
The president’s spokesman, Femi Adesina, had on March 1, in a statement, said that from Kenya, Buhari would proceed to London for ”routine medical checks that will last for a maximum of two weeks.”
However, the president shelved the plan and returned to Abuja on Friday.
