The Ebonyi State Police Command says the man, who died in an explosion on Tuesday in Afikpo, was not a suicide bomber as was widely reported.
The spokesperson for the command, Loveth Odah, made the clarification later on Tuesday, saying the the victim of the blast was a riot policeman on special deployment in the Afikpo North Local Government Area of the state.
According to her, the police officer served in the MOPOL 32 and was not a suicide bomber as being circulated in the social media and other platforms. Based on information from local sources, CHECKPOINTCHARLEY had also reported. The post has been deleted, following the clarification by the police.
The incident happened around ten in the morning opposite the Amizi Amangbala Primary School and the popular Eke Market in Afikpo.
Residents had said that the deceased was a suicide bomber, but Odah said the policeman, Idi Aminu, died as a result of an accidental hand grenade explosion.
“He mistakenly hit the lead of his grenade, which was hanging on his waist, with his elbow, resulting in the deadly explosion,” she said.
A source in the area said the incident happened around 10am.
Residents had earlier suspected that he was a suicide bomber, saying he made attempt to enter the Amaizu/Amangballa Primary School, but he was turned back by the school security men because he couldn’t explain his reason for visiting.
He then started running to a nearby bush before the explosion which took his life, they said.
