The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has announced that the military wing of the group has gotten a new commander, barely 24 hours after Ikonso was killed on Saturday by the Nigerian military in a joint operation with the police and operatives of the Department of State Service.
IPOB Secretary, Emma Powerful disclosed the emergence of a new commander when he appeared on Channels Tv, Sunday Politics, but declined to reveal his name.
Mr. Powerful also denied ESN’s involvement in Saturday’s attack on Hope Uzodinma’s country house.
He said, “ESN are not the ones that attacked Uzodinma’s house. They cannot come for an operation and tell you they are ESN.
According to him, ESN is only focused on pursuing Fulani herdsmen from the South East region.
When asked to respond to the formation security outfit Ebubeagu by the South East Governors, Powerful mocked, “They are ghost security outfit. There is no group like Ebubeagu”.
Security forces had stormed what they called the operational headquarters of the ESN in Awomama, Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State, killing Ikonso and six members of the group.
But in a live broadcast on Sunday night, IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu described his killing as a cowardly act by soldiers, who he said could not face him in battle. He said, contrary to what is being bandied around, Ikonso was killed in his sleep while visiting his village.
Kanu has vowed revenge for the fallen ESN commander.
