
Unidentified hoodlums have set the Owerri Correctional Prison on fire, freeing over 1500 inmates, CHECKPOINTCHARLEY has been informed.
The incident happened in the wee hours of Monday, as the hoodlums also razed the Imo State Police Command headquarters situated in Owerri and burnt almost all the vehicles parked at the command headquarters.
They broke into the prison facility with the aid of explosives and dynamite. This happened after sporadic shootings.
The hoodlums also freed the suspects in almost all the cells at the State Criminal Investigation Department of the command.
They were said to have sang solidarity songs at the Government House Roundabout for some minutes before attacking the facilities.
The police spokesperson in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, confirmed the attacks, saying the security agencies were on top of the matter.
This comes after the state Commissioner of Police, Nasiru Mohammed said that he had deployed over 4760 personnel to ensure maximum security during and after the Easter celebration.
