The political future of popular former Imo State governor, Emeka Ihedioha has become a subject of intense speculation as whispers of his looming defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, is spreading across the political landscape and social media like a wild fire.
This is just as the State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, battles hard to dismiss the whirlwind of rumours about Ihedioha’s next political move. The man seen by many to have been unfairly treated by the Nigerian Supreme Court, accused of giving his mandate to the present governor, Hope Uzodinma in a controversial judgement that defied both law and logic.
Imo State PDP Publicity Secretary, Ogubundu Nwadike, in a statement in Owerri on Wednesday pushed back the story that Ihedioha has concluded plans to join the APC, describing the speculation as the handiwork of mischief makers.
He emphatically stated that Ihedioha and some state party leaders are not leaving the PDP.
The statement read in part, “The attention of the Peoples Democratic Party, Imo State has been drawn to a mischievous, poorly scripted story, attributed to a national daily, as well as other social media news platforms, alleging plans by His Excellency, Emeka Ihedioha, CON and some notable leaders of our great party to decamp to the All Progressives Congress.
“Ordinarily, we would not dignify such inanity with an official response, but to ensure that nobody is held in doubt about the falsehood inherent in the said story. We not only declare unequivocally that Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, has no plans to leave our dear party, we authoritatively add that he and other leaders of our party in the state have no reason to contemplate such action.
“We wish to assure our teeming members, supporters, Imolites and Nigerians in general and indeed reiterate that there is no iota of truth that our members are leaving to another party. Only recently, Hon. Pascal Okolie, member of the Imo State House of Assembly representing Orlu State Constituency announced his defection and his followers from the ruling APC to our party and we are expecting more to follow soon.
“Imo PDP under the watch of Engr. Charles C. Ugwuh, OON is intact and there is no crack or leakage anywhere.”
Mr. Ihedioha has not directly responded to the speculation. Calls to his media aide, Chibuike Onyeukwu over the matter were not answered.
The hope of the Imo PDP to win back the Govt House in 2024 would be dealt a major blow should the news turn out to be true.
Mr. Ihedioha enjoys tremendous goodwill among Imo people, who felt disenfranchised by the Supreme Court and are only waiting to return the man they fondly call Ihediohanma to power in 2024.
