The Imo State House of Assembly has been impeached the Speaker, Chiji Collins over allegations of financial impropriety, high handedness, and gross misconduct, among others.
Collins was butted out by his colleagues on Friday during a plenary at the legislative chamber of the Assembly complex in Owerri after a motion for his impeachment was supported by 19 out of the 27 members of the House.
Paul Emeziem, member representing Onuimo Local Government Area, was later elected as the new Speaker.
mr. Collins was elected in June, 2019 after he defected from the All Progressives Grand Alliance to the PDP, during the ousted Emeka Ihedioha administration. When Governor Hope Uzodimma took over in January 2020, the impeached speaker again, alongside others, joined the APC.
Deputy Speaker, Chyna Iwuanyanwu, presided over the short session that impeached Collins. CHECKPOINTCHARLEY gathered that 16 legislators out of 27 impeached the former speaker, who was not present at the plenary.
After the impeachment, the new speaker, Emeziem with other members and his supporters headed to the Government House to visit Uzodimma. It is still unclear if the governor was behind the impeachment of Collins.
