Toluwalase Kembi, a 20-year-old polytechnic student, engaged to be married, has been killed and her body cut into three parts for ritual by a Lagos Man said to be her sideguy.
The 33-year-old suspect, Owolabi Yusuf also known as alfa, has been arrested and now in the custody of the Elere Police Division in the Agege area of Lagos.
The suspect has reportedly confessed to the police that he connived with three others, at-large, including a herbalist named Owonikoko, to kill the student, awaiting her industrial attachment, with a pestle when she visited him to spend the night.
The police were able to arrest Yusuf in the third week of August 2020 after he fled to Ilorin, Kwara State, after allegedly committing the murder.
However, the police are yet to recover the victim’s corpse, the family said. Family members said she just completed National Diploma, and should have proceeded for IT if not for the COVID-19 pandemic.
Toluwase, who lived with her parents on Orile Road, TabonTabon, Agege, had gone to sleep over in Yusuf’s place in the Ladeja area of Ikorodu, on July 28, after a phone call from her killer.
Toluwalase’s elder sister, Abimbola, gave details of the last moments with the deceased.
She said, “On July 28, I, she and my mummy were at home discussing. Minutes later, her phone rang and she picked the call outside. The next thing, she came back, took her bag and said she was going to see her friend in Ikorodu. In the evening, her fiancé named Segun called us and said Tolu called him that she was going to cook for someone in Ikorodu area, and that she said she was going to sleep over in Ikorodu.
“The following morning, he called us again that he called her and she didn’t pick. We also tried her mobile but nobody picked it up. Since then, we had been in this trouble. By the afternoon of that day, her phone was already switched off.
“All those times, she had already been killed by the friend she went to visit. We didn’t know. The police at the Elere division tracked her phone to Ikorodu and arrested the man in possession of the phone. The man then named Yusuf, also known as Alfa, as the seller. That was how the truth came out.”
Another relative, Michael Akintunde, said that the suspect told the police that he “cut Toluwalase’s body into three parts.”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident, saying efforts are being made to arrest the three other fleeing suspects.
He said, “Yes, we have a murder case at hand. Preliminary investigation revealed that one Owolabi Yusuf put a call to the deceased and we have been able to establish the involvement of Yusuf who is with us presently.”
