Jankara politics is in full blare at the moment in Edo State, where Fourteen lawmakers of the House of Assembly, whose seats had earlier been declared vacant have been sworn in at a private location.
Thereafter the newly inaugurated lawmakers, alongside three others who recently pledged their allegiance to Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) claim to have impeached the Speaker of the House, Francis Okiye, and his deputy, Roland Asoro.
The new Speaker, Mr. Victor Edoror, was allegedly elected at the undisclosed location in in Benin in an emergency plenary session attended by 17 elected members on Thursday.
Meanwhile, speaker Okiye has said that his purported impeachment was a non-issue.
He said, “It is a non-issue and I do not want to respond to such issues.”
Earlier on Thursday armed policemen had surrounded the Assembly complex in Benin City, the state capital.
This comes less than 24 hours after the Deputy Speaker, Yekini Idiaye, was impeached by the state lawmakers.
A video shared by Channels Television, showed men, believed to be political thugs removing the iconic legislative mace on top of the building.
