President Muhammadu Buhari’s close ally, Ismaila Isa Funtua, is dead.
A presidential aide, who did not want to be named, confirmed the death of Funtua to CHECKPOINTCHARLEY, saying he died after a brief illness on Monday..
Bashir Ahmad, another aide of the president, also confirmed his death in a tweet.
“Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un! Just heard about Mallam Ismaila Isa Funtua’s sudden death. This life! May Allah accept his soul, forgive his shortcomings and grant him Jannah al-Firdaus,” he tweeted.
Funtua, along with the late former Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari and the President’s nephew, Mamman Daura were infamously described as powerful members of the cabal that governed the country.
His son is married to Buhari’s daughter, Safina.
The deceased served as the Minister of Water Resources in the defunct Second Republic.
