The United Nations says Musician, Oladapo Oyebanjo aka D’Banj’s claim to be a United Nations Youth Ambassador for Peace is false.
The Director of Information, United Nations Information Centre for Nigeria, Joseph Kayanja, made the clarification in an email on Wednesday.
Recall that in 2012, D’Banj’s publicists had claimed that the musician was the first Nigerian to be appointed a UN Youth Ambassador for Peace.
There has been an online petition to revoke D’Banj’s UN ambassador status following a rape allegation against him.
The petition on Change.org has been already been signed by over 22,000 people as of today.
But in response the UN stated that D’Banj was never at any time given the title of ambassador.
The email read partly, “I would like to confirm that the said Mr. Oladapo Oyebanjo aka D’Banj is NOT a UN Ambassador. The title was accorded to him by an obscure UN youth association which has nothing to do with the United Nations. I hope this clarifies.”
The musician is currently a subject of police investigation.
Seyitan’s friend, Benjamin Ese, in a Twitter thread in early June, had alleged that D’Banj raped Seyitan at Glee Hotel, Lagos in December 2018.
