Suspected armed robbers on Thursday killed eight police officers when they unleashed terror in Isanlu town in Kogi State, robbing also the First Bank branch there.
A civilian was also reportedly killed.
The victims included the Divisional Police Officer in the town, five other policemen and two policewomen.
While the DPO, two policewomen, and four policemen were killed at the Police Station, one policeman was killed at the bank’s premises.
The civilian, a male, died when a stray bullet hit him.
The armed men reportedly invaded the police station, setting all the detainees free before killing the officers.
They later moved to the bank where they carted away an undisclosed amount of money.
According to an eye witness, the robbery operation lasted for about one hour.
The spokesman of the state police command, William Aya, confirmed the robbery and the attack on the police station. But said the casualty figure is “still hazy”.
He added that “the commissioner of police, Mr Ede Ayuba, has dispatched the deputy commissioner of police in charge of operation, to Isanlu to ascertain the true situation.”
