Smart Adeyemi Returns To Senate As INEC Declares Him Winner Of Kogi West Election

The All Progressives Congress, APC candidate in the Kogi West senatorial election, Smart Adeyemi will return to the Nigerian Senate after he was declared winner of the polls by the Returning Officer for the election, Olayinde Lawal.

Mr. Lawal declared Adeyemi winner at the end of the rerun on Saturday.

The APC candidate got 88,373 votes to defeat Dino Melaye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), his closest challenger, who polled 62,133 votes.

Mr Adeyemi is returning to the Senate five years after he lost the same seat to Melaye at the 2015 election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had a week ago declared the election inconclusive because the margin between Mr Adeyemi and Mr Melaye is lower than the number of “registered voters in 53 polling units of the 20 registration areas in the zone where elections were cancelled.”

Both candidates had polled 80,118 and 59,548 votes respectively.

Melaye had rejected the results.
