The Elders Council of Imo State All Progressives Congress (APC) have endorsed the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withhold the certificate of return of Governor, Rochas Okorocha.
Mr. Okorocha sees himself as the senator-elect for Imo South senatorial election, however INEC returning officer in the February election had said that he declared the Imo governor winner “under duress.”
Based on this, INEC had refused to issue Okorocha a certificate of return, saying his victory was fraudulent.
Okorocha had since gone to court in his bid to keep what he sees as his mandate.
But the Imo APC Elders Council on Wednesday, in a press statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Dr Edmund Onyebuchi, and his deputy, Chief Bernard Anyanwu in Owerri backed INEC’s decision, resolving not to support Okorocha in his fight to get a certificate of return.
Instead the elders resolved to support the party’s governorship candidate, Hope Uzodinma, who had filed a petition before the state election petitions tribunal in respect of the election won by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Emeka Ihedioha.
The council also said it will support all the party’s candidates for the state House of Assembly elections at the tribunal.
