Buhari Greets Obasanjo At 82, “I Still Hold Him In High Regard”

President Muhammadu Buhari congratulated Olusegun Obasanjo on his 82nd birthday, saying he would continue to hold the former president in high regard notwithstanding their differences.

Mr. Buhari said this on Tuesday in a felicitation message by his media aide, Garba Shehu.

The president made it clear that Obasanjo’s contributions to Nigeria overshadows their political differences.

Recall that the Mr. Obasanjo had opposed president Buhari’s re-election bid of Buhari and he said on Tuesday that he will not not criticising Buhari because such is normal in a democracy and because he is his boss.

The statement read, “President Muhammadu Buhari has described former President Olusegun Obasanjo as “a passionate and great patriot who deserves accolades for his immeasurable contributions to our democracy and national unity,” the statement read.

“Regardless of our political differences with Obasanjo, I still hold him in the highest esteem because his contributions to the development of the country overshadow those differences.

“Chief Obasanjo gave a good account of himself and inspired his juniors with his wit and other leadership skills.

“Nigeria’s successful transition to democratic rule in October 1979 was one of Obasanjo’s remarkable contributions to national development.

“As he celebrates his 82nd Birthday Anniversary, I wish Chief Obasanjo more good health, knowledge and wisdom in the service of Nigeria and humanity.”

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar had earlier in the day also congratulated his former boss on his birthday.

“No living Nigerian has given as much to Nigeria in peacetime and in war as you have. May almighty God grant you many more years in good health and continued service to Nigeria and the world at large,” Atiku had said in a message he posted on his official Facebook page.
