Palpable tension has enveloped the Abonnema community in the Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State following the killing of three soldiers by unkwown gunmen on Saturday night.
The gunmen, wearing military uniform, reportedly invaded the Samson Jack military checkpoint along Obonoma-Abonnema Road around 8pm and opened fire on the soldiers.
The attack left three soldiers dead and several others were said to have been injured.
Fearing reprisal attack by soldiers, a video shared on Facebook on Monday by media personality, Peter Agba Kalu showed several families on Sunday fleeing the community.
Condemning the attack on the soldiers, the Amananyabo of Abonnema, King Disrael Bob-Manuel, said such an action could not have been carried out by his people, whom he described as peace-loving and not capable of attacking soldiers.
The Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Aminu Iliyasu, is yet to comment on the incident despite our text message.
This comes one week after the bloody election day shoot-out between hoodlums and soldiers in the town.
The army said they killed six persons whom they called hoodlums as a reprisal carried out after a soldier was killed in an ambush.
But residents claimed that 35 people were killed.
