.Akwa Ibiom Under Siege – Gov Emmanuel
Nigeria’s political space produced another bizarre spectacle on Tuesday as five APC lawmakers, aided by thugs and armed policemen, met and commenced impeachment proceedings against the state Governor Udom Gabriel Emmanuel, sparking confusion at the resumed sitting of the of the Akwa Ibom House of Assembly.
The five lawmakers are the ones whose seats were recently declared vacant by the speaker of the House, Onofiok Luke.
They had reporedly arrived early at the Assembly complex with thugs and heavily armed policemen and with a mace to commence the impeachment of the governor, chasing everyone out, ruffling the press secretary to the speaker, Kufre Okon.
Thereafter, they headed straight to the chambers.
The ‘sitting’ was presided over by Nse Ntuen (Essien Udim State Constituency).
The other four lawmakers were Gabriel Toby, Etim Ekpo/Ika; Otobong Ndem, Mkpat Enin, Victor Udofia, Ikono and Idongesit Ituen, Itu.
Meanwhile, Governor Udom Emmanuel, who had stormed the Assembly complex during the confusion to chase away the lawmakers with DSS operatives, has said that Akwa Ibom State is under siege.
Mr. Emmanuel raised the alarm when he later addressed a world press conference in his official residence in Uyo.
He called for the redeployment of the Commissioner of Police, Musa Kimo, who had assumed duties last week despite eyebrows that were raised following his shock deployment to the state by Inspector General of police, Ibrahim Idris.
He replaced CP Bassey Abang.
Governor Emmanuel claimed that the police led by the CP, Musa Kimo is threatening the peace of the state by aiding the five sacked lawmakers to take over the State House of Assembly.
According to him, democracy in the state is being threatened, and called on the CP to be removed from the state this evening.
He stated that his government had received intelligence report of the plan of the sacked lawmakers to take over the House of Assembly and his plan was executed with the police assistance.
Gov Emmanuel regretted that the same police he used state resources to equip is today fighting the state.
He added that several petitions to President Buhari and IGP Idris about the activities of the Police and the sacked lawmakers have been ignored.
Mr. Emmanuel alleged that the sacked lawmakers want to create artificial sense of insecurity in Akwa Ibiom so as to prevent elections from holding in the state, warning that if elections were not held in the state as scheduled, then elections would not hold again.
