CHECKPOINTCHARLEY has been authoritatively informed that Imo State deputy governor, Prince Eze Madumere is set to alter the dynamics of the Imo State governorship race as he is about to back Mr. IKedi Ohakim’s bid to return to Douglas House, Owerri as governor.
It has now emerged that Mr. Madumere had supported Senator Hope Uzodinma during the Imo All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary on the understanding that he (Uzodinma) will later relinquish the ticket to him.
Now Uzodinma’s refusal to “do the right thing” by surrendering the APC governorship ticket, as agreed, and return to the senate for another tenure, has left Mr. Madumere disgruntled and with no choice than to plan his next political moves.
It is understood that Madumere and Uzodinma had joined forces to defeat the “evil” plan of Governor Rochas Okorocha to hand over to his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu.
A reliable source, knowledgeable about the said agreement, who does not want his name in print, told CHECKPOINTCHARLEY that Senator Uzodinma, despite entreaties by Madumere and some APC stalwatrs, who contributed to Nwosu’s defeat, had refused to do what was agreed upon.
According to the source, Madumere has met Ohakim thrice as both men galvanize Madumere’s looming switch of support to him and the Accord Party in the Imo gubernatorial election.
“They met again on Thursday evening at Osmond “Ossy” Ukanacho’s Owerri residence.
“I can tell you that both men have agreed to work together.
“Attractive to Madumere and his group is the fact that Ohakim will only do four years and then support the deputy governor as the next governor,” the source said.
According to him, if this political alliance if forged, it would change the dynamics of the Imo State governorship race.
He said, “Ohakim is a former governor from Okigwe zone and has the political structure and muscle to win in his zone.
“While Madumere, enjoying a lot of sympathy due to the ill-treatment meted out to him by Governor Okorocha delivers Owerri zone or help Ohakim split it with PDP candidate, Emeka Ihedioha – an Mbaise man under Owerri zone.
“With that Ohakim will be the candidate to beat in the Imo governorship race in 2019.”
Meanwhile, Justice K A Ojiako of the Imo State High Court on Wednesday nullified the purported governorship primaries allegedly conducted on 6th October 2018, which was said to have been won by Mr. Nwosu.
The court granted all the reliefs sought by the plantiff, Madumere, who contested the first APC gov primary held on 1st October, which was won by Senator Uzodinma.
