The Imo State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Hope Uzodinma has denied the report of his arrest by security men, saying that it was the handwork of his political enemies.
The senator issued the rebuttal in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday by the National Secretary of National Association of Igbo Youths, Chuks Nnanyelugo, who also condmened the media reports of Uzodinma’s arrest on Sunday.
The group claimed that the media report about the arrest, which was alleged to have happened at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport on Sunday, is the highest level of junk journalism.
The statement read in part, “it is disappointing and shameful for people to peddle such unfounded rumours and allegation against a notable Igbo man who has devoted his wealth and lifetime for the care of the poor and the welfare of the downtrodden in the Nigerian society.
“As at this morning we put a call across to chief Uzodinma who was in his house attending to domestic issues and he completely denied that such an incident took place, as he said that as a senator of The Federal Republic Of Nigeria he has always behaved and done his business with absolute transparency and abiding integrity. we, therefore, wonder when and where the said report emanated from.
“We, however, feel that such a purported incident, arrest and detention only existed in the imagination of the writers.
“In the present day experiment of our nascent democratic system, we advise that the press should be very thorough in its dissemination of information to the public as a way of ensuring peace and harmony in the country.”
It added, “Our association which is non – political and non -partisan will like to see a Nigerian society where people see each other as their brothers and sisters irrespective of tribe, religion or political affiliation.
“Our advice is that political campaigns should be centred on issues rather than character assassination rancour and bitterness.
“This kind of unfounded allegation and misinformation we feel cannot do any good in the orbit of our political horizon.”
Senator Uzodinma had recently floored governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State and his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu to grab the Imo APC governorship ticket after a bitter battle.
