A 32-year-old idle farmer in the Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State, David Shakari, has been arrested by operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team for allegedly raping his own mother and mother-in-law, who are in their 50s and 60s respectively.
The man reportedly came back home drunk one night after attending a festival in his community sometime in August 2017 and forcefully had sex with his mother, who he met asleep.
Both had lived in the same house. After his abominable act, he begged his mother when he allegedly regained his senses the next day, promising that it will never happen again.
But about three months later, the man attended another festival in his ex-wife’s community in Mahuta and got drunk again. This time he allegedly raped his mother-in-law in her house where he had wanted to spend the night.
According to the police, Shakari fled after raping his ex-mother-in-law but was chased by neighbours who were alerted by the victim’s cry.
Shakari admitted to the Punch on Thursday of raping his mother but said he had not penetrated into his ex-wife’s mother’s private parts before she raised the alarm.
He said he went into farming after he completed secondary school but became tired of the work after some years, explaining that it made him have enough time to lazy about as he could not find another job.
Shakari told the newspaper, “I got married in 2002. My wife was in secondary school then. It was agreed that she should complete her education at her parents’ home before she would move to my house. We have a child together. Later, she got remarried to another man.
“I was into farming, but I did not like the work. I wanted to further my education. Last year, I attended Moroha Festival and got drunk. I went home and met my mother asleep. She was the only person at home. My father is dead and my daughter lives with her maternal grandmother.
“I did not know when I raped my mother. The following day, a family meeting was held and I pleaded with her. She forgave me and I promised not to do such a thing again.
“Some months later, I attended another festival at my ex-wife’s community. In the night, I went to the house of my ex-wife’s mother. The door to her apartment was not locked. I entered and met her asleep. As I was trying to rape her, she woke up and shouted. I fled the room. People chased me, but they did not catch me. I have repented now. I committed the crime because I did not have any work doing. I have also stopped taking alcohol.”
Some vigilantes in Mahuta reported the incident to the IRT led by DCP Abba Kyari and a manhunt was launched for the suspect, a police source said.
Shakira was eventually arrested in Samunaka in the Dere Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
