NHIS Board Suspends Controversial Executive Secretary, Yusuf

Usman Yusuf

The controversial Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Prof. Usman Yusuf, has been suspended indefinitely by the governing council of the HIS, eight months after he was controversially reinstated by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Chairperson of the NHIS governing council, Ifenne Enyanatu, disclosed this on Thursday when she read out the resolution of the council to journalists after a two-day closed door meeting at the head office of the NHIS in Abuja.

The council resolved to suspend Yusuf because it had received several petitions against the NHIS boss, she said and added that the council had the backing of the health minister, Prof. Isaac Adewole.

The council chairman stated that Mallam Sadiq Abubakar will for the time being be in charge in acting capacity as NHIS boss.

Enyanatu further said the council also resolved to set up an administrative panel to investigate Yusuf for three months and it was only right for him to step aside pending the outcome of the probe.

Mr. Yusuf, who is under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission as well as the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, was suspended by the minister in July last year, following a directive from the then Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, that he be probed.

He was later indicted for acts of nepotism and fraud to the tune of N900m by a panel set up by the minister, pursuant to Mr. Osinbajo’s order.

He was therefore suspended, but in a bizarre twist, Mr. Yusuf was ordered to be reinstated by President Buhari upon his return to the country.
