Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, has warned that his opponent in the 2019 governorship primary of the All Progessives Congress (APC) is not fit to rule the state, alleging that he was once arrested for spending fake dollars at a nightclub in the US.
Ambode sounded the warning at a press conference on Sunday at Government House, Alausa, Ikeja.
Though he did not mention any name about whom he was talking about.
Ambode said, “We have never responded to the campaign of calumny on social media. We have one family in APC. The aspirant being put up to compete against us is not a fit and proper person to take this job,” he said.
“I have done everything in the last three and half years to serve people selflessly and to serve the poor. This particular aspirant is someone who has been arrested for spending fake dollars in a nightclub in America, and he was detained for months.
“He doesn’t have the competence to do what he is being propelled to do. This is somebody that has gone for rehabilitation before. The records are there at the Gbagada General Hospital. We don’t want to go to far. Our leadership should have a rethink.
“I plead with our leaders to have a rethink, It is not about me, it is about the opportunity that APC has.”
An embattled Ambode called the emergency press conference amid immense pressure on him to step down in the Lagos APC governership contest for Jide Sanwo-Olu, who the governor might be was referring to.
Meanwhile Ambode’s opponent has been endorsed by all the state’s 57 local government chairpersons about two weeks ago and by 36out of the 4o Lagos House of Assembly members over the weekend.
Notwithstanding these, Mr. Ambode has refused to abandon his second term ambition, like he had been pressurized to do.
CHECKPOINTCHARLEY understands that today’s press conference was aimed to tell APC chieftains in the state that he will not quit.
The APC Lagos State governorship primary takes place on Monday.
