The All Progressives Congress, APC, political ship sank deeper into troubled waters on Wednesday as Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal announced his long expected defection to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Mr. Tambuwal made the announcement in a tweet on Wednesday via the Sokoto Government House (@SokotoGovtHouse): “I have consulted widely especially with the Sokoto people and they have confidently assured me of my next political move. I hereby defect officially to the @OfficialPDPNig. Power to the People”

Thousands of his supporters had gathered outside the Governement House, as the state government tweeted an earlier notification, “Big announcement coming from @SokotoGovtHouse. Details shortly.”

Eighteen out of the 30 members of the Sokoto State House of Assembly on Wednesday followed Governor Tambuwal by defecting from the APC to the PDP.
The Speaker, Salihu Maidaji, who was among the 18 defecting members, made the announcement at the Assembly plenary on Wednesday.
The APC has been hit by exodus of high profile members who are discontent with the direction the country is heading to under the watch of President Muhammadu Buhari.
15 senators, including the senate president Bukola Saraki, had recently dumped the APC in a mass defection.
Earlier on Wednesday, before Tambuwal announced his defection, APC’s National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Mr. Bolaji Abdullahi, finally tendered his resignation to the party leadership after days of rumours and denials of his dumping the ruling party.
Not to mention the recent defections of Kwara and Benue governors. On Tuesday, the Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, a loyalist of the senate president, followed him to the PDP after dumping the APC.
Mr. Ahmed was the second governor after Samuel Ortom of Benue to dump the ruling party in a matter of days.
Despite these, the APC continues to be confident of winning the 2019 elections.
