Coach of Super Eagles of Nigeria, Gernot Rohr has acknowledged that his boys lost the match against Croatia because their opponents were better and more experienced, adding that they deserved the win.
The German coach said this in a live interview withe German national television network, ZDF after the defeat at Kaliningrad Stadium, Russia, in a match in which the winners had only two shots on target – the penalty in the 71st minute and the second coming in the added time.
Mr Rohr however said that he was proud of his boys.
“They gave their all and fought hard but it was not good enough against Croatia who had more experienced players.
“We are not giving up, we will try something else in our two remaining matches against Iceland and Argentina to qualify from the group,” he said.
According to him, the quality is there and he is happy with the performance of his team.
An own goal two minutes after the half hour mark by Stoke City new signing, Oghenekaro Etebo put the Croats on the path to victory.
The win was sealed in the 71st minute by Real Madrid star, Luca Modric through a penalty awarded by Brazilian referee, Sandro Ricci following a terrible defending by Nigerian defender, Oghenekaro Etebo.
Nigeria’s next match is against Iceland on Friday. Iceland gallantly fought Argentina to a 1-1 draw in the first game in group D.
With that result, Nigeria must win Iceland and get at least a draw against Lionel Messi led Argentina to stand any chance f progressing from the group.
