The Nigerian Police on Tuesday said they have foiled an attempt by Senator Dino Melaye to escape from custody, which left the lawmaker injured.
Melaye was said to have suddenly jumped out of the police vehicle at Area one Roundabout, Garki, Abuja, while be conveyed to Lokoja, the Kogi State capital to answer the allegations against him in a case of arming thugs.
As the embattled senator, representing Kogi West ejected from the police van, four hefty men believed to be his supporters, reportedly emerged from nowhere to foil the move to take him to Lokoja.
This shocked the policemen, who were conveying him to Lokoja and they threatened to shoot the lawmaker and his supporters.
This reportedly led to a scuffle, which left Melaye injured.
The lawmaker was subsequently rushed to the hospital in an ambulance, eyewitnesses said.
He has been admitted at the Zanklin Hospital, Abuja as at the time of filing this report.
Melaye was earlier today arrested by the police in Abuja.
The police were allegedly taking him to Kogi State where they planned to parade him before the media along with six suspects for alleged gun running.
