A Nigerian police inspector, Lawal Murtala, who allegedly assaulted and detained a woman for recording him while he brutalized “an innocent man” has been arrested and detained on the orders of Lagos State Police Commissioner.
A police source told CHECKPOINTCHARLEY that Murtala is now detained at Dopemu police station, Agege, Lagos.
Recall that one Anne Bibi, had posted a video on her Facebook page accusing Murtala of slapping her, seizing her phone and detaining her for hours merely becuae she videoed him while he assaulted “an innocent man”.
Bibi had also alleged that Murtala forcefully deleted the pictures and videos on her phone before damaging the screen, saying that the Inspector claimed videoing a police officer is a crime.
But little did the Inspector know that the lady had sent the videos and pictures to her sister through a messaging app, WhatsApp.
“Murtala is now in custody on orders from above,” the source said.
“I overheard the Lagos State Police spokesman telling the Dopemu divisional police officer, that oga (CP) is very angry over Murtala’s behaviour.
“He said he is an embarrassment to the Nigerian Police Force,” the source added.
Bibi also confirmed to CHECKPOINTCHARLEY that she got a call from the police telling her of Murtala’s arrest and detention.
It is understood that Murtala is being charged with assault and character defamation.
About her phone damaged by the inspector, Bibi said that the police is offering to repair it.
“But I rejected it. I demanded they pay for it.
“We did not reach any agreement, so the CP will decide on that next week.
“The case has been transfered to the Lagos State Command headquarters.”
