Poland have struggled since their 4-2 demolition of Montenegro at home in August 2017 to qualify for the world cup in Russia.
Since that triumph, the white and Reds have been on a win-less run, with Mexico humiliating them 1-0 at home on 13th November 2017, three days after an uninspiring goalless draw against Uruguay.
However, the Adam Nawalk’s side would seek a better fortune when they face the Super Eagles of Nigeria, as both teams sharpen their tactics for Russia 2018.
Unlike, Poland, Nigeria will step into the Municipal Stadium on Friday night with their 4-2 heroics against Argentina last November at the back of their minds, as they aim to continue their incredible run of form under unassuming German coach, Gernat Rohr.
Since 2016, Nigeria have lost only one game. It was the 0-2 defeat against South Africa in the Nations Cup qualifier in Uyo.
Nawalk was full of praises for Nigeria on Thursday and expects a tough game.
He said, “Nigeria is a great team that ha gone to the world cup on a number of occasions and have done very well at the world cup.
“They have world class players in top clubs in Europe and are very technical, fast and athletic.
“We are in the group at the world cup with Senegal, so it is not a coincidence that we chose to play against Nigeria so as to get a test of what to expect from players from that part of the world.”
Nawalka however added that his side are very prepared for the clash and I hope my players would recover very quickly for the next game.
Conversely, coach Rohr rued the absence of his captain, Mikel Obi, who is stuck in China as he tries to get a new wok permit.
He recalled that the last time his team lost was when they played against South Africa in Uyo.
But he hopes this time it would be better.
We have a team but we need a leader.
„John Mikel Obi is our uncontested leader but it would be interesting to see how the other player can do without him.“
„But we are playing as a team, and we have other players who can take responsibility; we have a second and third captain.
„I think the team will be able to give a good answer.“
Since the 4-2 historic defeat of Argentina, the Super Eagles players have not played together as a team and like Rohr pointed out, the test against Poland will help get them out of the „rust“.
Both sides have not met before but with both heading to this summer’s World Cup victory on Friday would boost their squad morale. It is dubbed a friendly but a lot is at stake. Nne of the teams would want to start their world cup preparation with a defeat.
Bayern Munich star, Robert Lewandowski is expected to lead Poland as they seek to shoot down the Eagles before a partisan home crowd. He would be a handful for Nigeria’s defence, especially goalkeeper Ezenwa who is expected to start the game.
Coach Rohr has chosen a 4-2-3-1 formation with struggling Leicester City striker, Kelechi Iheanacho as the arrow ahead – with support from Iwobi, Musa Moses.
Poland, presently, is one of Europe’s big teams and how the Super Eagles, with the youngest squad for Russia 2018, measure against them, would be a pointer to what to expect when they play against their world cup group opponents, Iceland and Croatia.
Taking a look at Nigeria’s line-up, they have the quality needed to silence Poland at home. But then again, it would, as always depend on how the boys take the chances they will surely create. Goal scoring remain the bane of African football.
CHECKPOINTCHARLEY will be live at the Wroclaw Stadium.
