Many people were feared dead on Friday in Kinere, Simba and Shure villages, in the Song Local Government Area of Adamawa State after herdsmen clashed with natives.
Many houses were reportedly razed by the herdsmen during the attack on the villages.
It is understood that trouble started when the herdsmen took their cows to a pond in Kinere village to drink from the pond – the community’s only source of water.
A villager, who had gone to fetch water at the pond was said to have confronted the herders.
The herdsmen immediately pounced on the villager, leaving him injured.
On getting the wind of what happened, other villagers reportedly mobilised to the scene and killed some of the herdsmen.
Laater on a reprisal mission, the herdsmen invaded the community, killing many people and settiny many houses ablaze.
With their appetite for vegeance unsatisfied, they allegedly went to the neigbouring villages of Simba and Shure and aalso wrecked havoc.
Adamawa state Police Public Relations Officer, Othman Abubakar, confirmed the incident and said the number of casualties are yet to be ascertained.
He said, “The situation is under control. We are still addressing the situation and monitoring is on. Some houses were burnt.
“The incident was caused as a result of a pond in Kinere community used for drinking. The herders took their cows to drink there and unfortunately there was a misunderstanding, which resulted in fracas.”
