Arsene Wenger’ B team gamble backfired at City Ground on Sunday as Championship side, Nottingham crushed Arsenal 4-2 to send them out of the FA cup.
It was already 2-1 at halftime with two brilliant goals from US international, Eric Lichaj, leaving Wenger, who is serving touchline ban, scratching his head over his experiment. He had restored Forest lead with a minute to the break after veteran defender, Per Mertesacker cancelled his 2oth minute opener, three minutes after.
Arsenal’s inexperienced defence line-up had failed to clear from danger by gifting Lichaj a free ball and he volleyed in from the edge of the box.
After the break, Rob Holding conceded a penalty and teenager Ben Brereton converted in the 64th minute to make matters worse for the Gunners 3-1.
Ten minutes from time, Danny Welbeck gave Arsenal a glimmer of hope when he pulled one back. But Kieran Dowell netted from the penalty spot again to seal a famous 4-2 win over Arsenal
Forest’s Joe Worrall was sent off in the 89th minute but it was too late for Arsenal for launch a comeback.
