Johnson Igwedibia, popularly known as Don Wanny, the notorious kidnapper and alleged mastermind of the Omoku massacre, has been killed by Nigerian security operatives.
Wanny, was confirmed killed in a combined operation by the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Army.
A security source said that he was trailed and killed in a community in Enugu.
The incident happened at about 5 p.m. on Saturday, the source said.
But when contacted the Rivers Director of DSS, Mr Tosin Ajayi, said: “No comment for now.”
Recall that at least 21 persons were killed in Aligwu community in Omoku, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State and many other severely wounded after a group of unknown gunmen invaded the town on New Year day.
The massacre was allegedly led by Don Wanny’s younger brother.
In October 2017 the Nigerian Army raided Don Wanny’s home in Aligwu, killing a number of his gang members and took over his luxury property.
It is gathered that after the Omoku massacre, Wanny went underground by relocating to a quiet neighbourhood around Enugu Town, Enugu State.
He is said to have rented an apartment and started living among unsuspecting neighbours.
Nevertheless, the DSS managed to track him. After which a combined team of troops of 82 Division Nigerian Army Enugu and personnel of DSS Rivers State Command raided the hideout to arrest him and his cohorts.
But Wanny, his Second- in- Command (Ikechukwu Adiele) and another gang member (Lucky Ode) on sensing the raid, attempted to escape but were shot by the troops.
It is understood that one of them died instantly, while the other wounded two eventually died before they could get medical help.
The remains of Don Wanny and partners in crime have been handed over to the Rivers State Police Command.
