Mr. Laolu Akande, Senior Special Assistant Media and Publicity to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Thursday, in a series of tweets on his confirmed Twitter handle, @akandeoj, said the Vice President approved the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation joint venture financing contracts as disclosed by the government-owned oil firm.
According to Akande, his principal approved the recommendations for the contracts as part of necessary actions to deal with the backlog of unpaid cash calls and incentivise investments.
He said Osinbajo approved the contract in his capacity as the Acting President when President Muhammadu Buhari was away on medical vacation, claiming that the approval was given after due diligence and adherence to established procedure.
He tweeted, “In response to media inquiries on NNPC joint venture financing, VP Osinbajo, as Ag President approved recommendations after due diligence and adherence to established procedure.
“Action was necessary to deal with huge backlog of unpaid cash calls which Buhari administration inherited and also to incentivise much needed fresh investments in the oil and gas sector.”
This comes as a surprise to observers. Recall that the VP had reportedly sent back the NNPC GMD, Maikanti Baru to Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu on the matter of personnel changes, how then come that the same Osinbajo, when tax payers money was involved, would approve contracts worth N640billion without referring the Baru back to Kachikwu? Very strange.
CHECKPOINTCHARLEY thinks the truth has not been told.
Mr. Kachikwu had in a leaked memo to President Buhari alleged gross insubordination by Baru.
He had also accused the GMD of awarding $25billion contracts without following due process and without consulting the office of the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources or the board of the corporation.
