An Australian returnee Stephen Ogho-Oghene Akpata, 40, has been arrested by the Police in Bayelsa State for allegedly stabbing his wife to death shortly after making love to her and one month after their court wedding.
The man had accused his 33-year-old wife, identified as Onyinye Faustina Eze, who was reportedly a staff of Globacom Nigeria Limited, of infidelity.
Akpata, who confessed to committing the dastardly act when paraded by the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Amba Asuquo, was arrested in Lagos after his attempt to flee to Ghana was thwarted.
Mr. Asuquo said the police was alerted on August 16 at about 2pm when one Moses Awo complained that Onyinye failed to report to her place of work. He said Awo told the police that some workers went to her apartment in search of her and discovered that the door was locked but that her TV set was on and loud.
The CP said a police team, who later went to the apartment found the lifeless body of the deceased, who hailed from Abia State, in the pool of her blood.
He said: “The room was scattered and the deceased was lying dead facing the ground in a pool of blood. We recovered three quarter knickers, a park of canvass, one damaged pressing iron, a jean jacket, pen knife, pink underwear, a Nokia handset and a damaged wristwatch, from the scene”.
On how the deceased was killed, Amba said: “Marks of violence on the deceased’s head, face, neck and body revealed that the deceased was strangled with the pressing iron and its coil tied round her neck and stabbed with a knife to her death”.
According to the CP, the suspect told the police that he stabbed her with a knife on the neck and shoulder.
He also revealed that the suspect confessed to have served in various detention centers in Australia, where he lived for 27 years in Australia.
The suspect, reportedly became infuriated after he saw a text message on his wife’s phone, which led him to conclude that she was having extramarital affair. He was said to have confronted her and heated argument erupted, then he stabbed her on the neck and on the shoulder, which caused the woman to bleed to death.
