Barcelona, battered 5-1 (aggregate) by Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup have resolved to strengthened their squad. The Catalan club has therefore intensified its bid to sign Ousmane Dembele and Philippe Coutinho from Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool respectively.
Barcelona general manager, Pep Segura dropped the hint after soul-searching following the humiliating defeat and said negotiations with Liverpool for Brazilian playmaker Coutinho and Borussia Dortmund over a deal for French winger Dembele could be finalised within hours.
“We have to help the team with reinforcements and they will be here in the coming days,” Segura told Catalan TV station Esport3 after his side lost the second leg of the Super Cup 2-0 played at Santiago Bernabeu.
“We are discussing the conditions of Coutinho and Dembele…they are close.
“We hope they will be Barca players next season.”
In both legs of the Super Cup, Barcelona never looked like the club that dominated both Spanish and European football for the past years.
New Barca coach Ernesto Valverde has never denied the fact that Neymar’s absence has weakened his team.
Botth Dortmund and Liverpool are holding Barca holding at the jugular, demanding fees exceeding 100 million Euros – quite aware of Barca’s desperation to find a replacement for Neymar before the transfer window shuts on August 31.
