While Nigeria’s treasury looters move around in Abuja as VIPs (with some even aspiring to be president), an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Tuesday sentenced one Kabiru Mohammed, 27, to three years imprisonment for stealing a cell phone valued at N33, 000.
The Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule-Amzat, sentenced Mohammed after he pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing, after he was pushed into crime by the sins of the treasury looters.
Sule-Amzat held that the convict should served-out the three years without an option of fine.
He said the prosecution was able to establish that the convict stole and sold phone to one Baba Iyabo at Mile 12 Market in Lagos.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Lucky Ihiehie, told court that the accused committed the offence with some others still at large on July 6 at Bariga, Lagos.
Ihiehe said the complainant, one Ajayi Okikola, a security guard attached to Mile 12 Market reported the matter at the Ketu Police post.
“While the complainant was on duty, information got to him that the accused had stolen a phone from someone at Bariga and was heading to Mile 12 Market to sell it.
“The complainant intercepted the accused, who confessed to have stolen the Infinix cell phone from a passenger in a bus at Bariga.
The offence contravened Section 411 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
