UDATED! Former Benue Governor Suswam Arraigned On Fresh Corruption Charges

Former Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam

Former governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam was on Monday arraigned on a fresh 32-count charge of fraud at an Abuja Division of the Federal High Court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. He was arraigned alongside two others, Omadachi Oklobia, a former Benue State finance commissioner and Jeneth Aluga, ex-accountant general of the state.

The three defendants are accused of diverting public funds to the tune of N9,791,602,453.8, which was meant for the SURE-P scheme and police reform.

The money  was allegedly diverted by the defendants between 2012 and 2015 while Suswam was at the helm as governor.
The SURE-P scheme was set up by the then President Goodluck Jonathan administration to cushion the effects of the part removal of fuel subsidy in 2012.

The three defendants, who are already under trial on similar charges at the same court, but presided over by another judge, all pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Despite granting the three accused persons bail in the sum of N250m, among other conditions, Justice Gabriel Kolawole ordered them to be remanded in prison pending when the Deputy Chief Registrar, Litigation, of the Federal High Court, Abuja would certify that the bail conditions have been met.
