Kogi became a laughing stock on Mondays as supporters of the Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye and those of the Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaha Bello engaged in a deadly clash in the state capital, Lokoja that left at least three people dead.
CHECKPOINTCHARLEY understands that Mr. Melaye’s arrived the State Polytechnic, Felele, at about 11am to mobilize his supporters against his recall from the Senate. Midway into his speech, clashes erupted between the supporters of Senator Melaye and others believed to be pro-Governor Yahaha Bello, as some unknown gunmen alighted from a Sienna SUV, and moved to stop the rally.
This elicited gunshots from his supporters and those of Gov Bello. The shootings lasted for over one hour before a combined team of security personnel, including the Army and DSS operatives arrived the scene.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Air Commodore Jerry OModara (rtd.) and the state Commissioner of Police Wilson Inalegwu were both sighted.
Melaye later said that three people were killed and several others injured by those he said are agents of Gov Bello, who he believes is bankrolling his recall.
This is yet to be officially confirmed.
Call by CHECKPOINTCHARLEY to Senator Melaye was not answered and he is yet to respond to text messages.
There is a long standing personality clash between Melaye and Bello. Now it may have claimed the lives of the downtrodden, who have nothing to gain – head or tail.
