Nigeria’s richest and smartest kidnapper, Chukwudubem Onwuamadike, alias Evans, has been arrested by the police in Lagos. After five years of trailing him, operatives of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) finally nabbed Evans, who had been a thorn in the flesh of Nigerians in the South-West, South-South and South-East.
He was arrested on Saturday at his Magodo mansion, which he said he bought for N130million, around 1pm ater he was overpowered in a gun duel. He will be paraded on Sunday, police spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, CSP, who confirmed his arrest said.
Four AK47 rifles and over 50 magazines were said to have been recovered from his house.
The long arm of the law eventually caught up with the native of Nnewi, with a N30million bounty on his head, following a tip-off. The operatives got intelligence that Evans was hiding in his Magodo mansion and they quickly stormed the house and surrounded it. The suspect was said to have run to the roof of the house in a desperate burst for exit but the policemen caught up with him.
A policeman was injured in the course of arresting him, the source said. Evans, obviously overwhelmed with a surge of adrenaline, had slammed a door against the operatives and injured the policeman in a needless resistance.
Recall that Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris had announced a N30million reward for anyone with useful information that could lead to his arrest. The police accuse Evans of been responsible for many high profile kidnapping and armed robberies in the south-west, south-south and south-eastern parts of Nigeria.
He was rated as a brilliant criminal who have collected billions of naira as ransom from his victims, including expatriates, business moguls and public office holders. It is gathered the Mr. Idris had deployed all resources as they police hunted for Evans, who had been the focus of the Nigerian Police the last one month.
Talking about how Evans was finally nabbed, the source said, “Someone called and gave information on his whereabouts. When we got there, he hid inside the roof of the house. He could not withstand the pressure on him from the police.
“While Vampire was the most deadly kidnapper in the history of Nigeria and was caught some months ago during a gun battle, Evans remains the most brilliant, richest and crafty kidnapper in the country’s history.”
Evans, who said he had been into kidnapping for 10 years, told police investigators that he has two houses in Magodo, which he brought for N130million and N70million and two other houses in Ghana with four bedroom duplex each.
He also said that he has a wristwatch he bought for $170,000 and nine phones, three of which cost $6,000 each.
It was gathered that Evans was nearly at the brink of escaping justice before his arrest. He had already relocated to Ghana and was at the verge of travelling to Europe before his cup got full. In pursuance of his plan, he had sent his wife away when he got wind of the fact that the police were trailing him.
It is believed that he came to his Lagos mansion to take something important before he finally bid farewell to a country and a people he allegedly terrorized for ten good years.
