The amnesty programme of Governor Nyesom Wike seems not to be working as unknown gunmen on Thursday invaded Sime community, a suburb of Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State and killed more than 14 people. with many others injured. On top of that, six people were also reportedly abducted in Andoni Local Government Area of the state in an operation that can only be possible in a lawless society. It left scores injured.
Sime community is the hometown of the People Democratic Party (PDP) aspirant, Hon. Jacobson Mbina. He had recently raised alarm over worsening in security in his constituency.
The unknown gunmen are said to have stormed the Ogoni community, shooting sporadically and when the chaos ended, 14 people, who had the misfortune of being citizens of a country that can not protect them, were dead. Many others sustained wounds.
An eyewitness, who witnessed the carnage, said the corpse of the victims had been deposited at mortuary. According to him, the gunmen invaded the houses of their targets, shot them and operated for hours with no response from security agencies before fleeing.
The man who simply identified himself as Friday told the Nation: “This is what happened this evening. Some unknown gunmen entered the community and started shooting and people were running from one direction to another.
“It was after the shooting had ended that we got to know that about 14 people had been murdered.
“Many people sustained bullet wounds during the attack. The people are living in anxiety. This is not the first time this evil men are killing people in Ogoni land.”
The National Coordinator Ogoni Solidarity Forum (OSF) Comrade Celestine AkpoBari told the press that OSF and the entire Ogoni people condemn the incessant killings taking place in the area and other parts of Rivers State.
Mr. Akpobari urged the Rivers State government to protect the lives of Ogoni people and that of the people of Rivers State. He said that the people of the state are no longer comfortable with the way people were being butchered like animals.
He said: “We are not happy and Rivers people are not happy that we wake up in the morning on daily basis hearing one killing or the other. These people are human beings.
“They are not goats or chickens. The government must be proactive on the issue of security to life.
“We will continue to condemn what is happening in Ogoni land. Ogoni people cannot run away from their land. But it is time to come together for the peace and progress of the area. Those who are killing should know that some day, they would be killed by someone.”
Also in Andoni Local Government Area, a source told the newspaper that at least than six people were reportedly abducted by unknown gunmen, who rode on two gunboats and seven speedboats and raided a fishing settlement in Asaramatoru area.
Apart from escaping with six of their targets at the end, the source said that the gunman left an unconfirmed number of casualties during the attack.
The Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer , DSP Nnamdi Omoni, has not responded to calls and text messages over the attacks.
Rivers State, after the trouble of militancy, is now battling, albeit unsuccessfully, to rid the state of cultists. Many blame politicians as being the ones who armed the cultists when they sought political power by all means possible.
In that part of the world called Nigeria, life can longer be taken for granted.
