A Lagos Federal High Court, presided over by Justice Muslim Hassan, on Friday ordered the temporary forfeiture of the sum of $153,310,000, allegedly stolen from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) by former minister of petroluem resources, Mrs. Deziani Alison-Madueke and stashed away in three Nigerian banks.
Out of the loot, N23,446,300,000 was kept in Sterling Bank, N9,080,000,000 in First Bank and $5million in Access Bank.
Justice Hassan further gave Sterling Bank and any other interested party 14 days to appear before him and show cause why there will not be a permanent forfeiture by proving the legitimacy of the monies. At the expiration of the ultimatum, the funds would be permanently be confiscated, he said.
The judge made the orders pursuant to an ex-parte application made on Friday by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
