The Senate in Brazil has just voted 61-20 to impeach President Dilma Rouseff. She was accused of corruption and abuse of office by breaking budget laws. However Rouseff has maintained her innocence, calling the impeachment trial a coup against her government.
Rouseff, who took office in 2011 and was narrowly reelected in 2014, said her impeachment is politically motivated since most of the Senators, are fighting to save themselves, as they also face corruption charges.
Interim President Michael Temer will now serve out the remainder of her tenure.
But is it really game over for Rouseff, a former guerilla fighter? She can take her matter to the country’s Supreme Court. But it is unlikely that the decision of the Senate would be reversed.
