An attempt by embattled former minister of aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode to secure his freedom has been rebuffed by a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory Abuja today. The court dismissed a fundamental human rights enforcement case filed by Fani-Kayode seeking his release from prison.
Fani-Kayode, spokesperson of erstwhile Peoples Democratic Party’s Presidential Campaign Organisation for the 2015 Election, had sought the protection of the court following his arrest by the EFCC on May 9, 2016 for alleged criminal diversion of funds meant for arms procurement to political campaigns.
He was yesterday arraigned by the EFCC alongside a former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman, who was the Director of Finance of the campaign organisation and two others. They were charged with money laundering.
Justice Olukayode Adeniyi held that the suit filed by Fani-Kayode to challenge his detention by the EFCC lacked merit. Therefore, his detention was not illegal since it was backed by an order of court.
Justice Adeniyi nevertheless frowned at the practice by the EFCC of arresting and detaining a suspect for the purposes of investigation.
